Volunteer Job Descriptions
Children’s Program
Volunteers supervise children of various ages while playing, reading or
doing crafts with children/taking children on outings. This often happens
while the mom is attending a support group, at an appointment or needing
respite time. Times may be scheduled in advance or on a “call as needed
basis”. Current scheduled times include Mon-Fri 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM,
Tuesday-Thursday 6:30 - 8:30 PM.
Client Assistance
Volunteers assist women residing in shelter with transportation and/or
accompaniment to errands and medical, legal or housing appointments. This
area also includes volunteers who are willing to assist women leaving the
shelter with moving into their new home. This is on a “call as needed
basis”.
Donations
Donations volunteers assist with sorting, picking up donations from
retailers, and putting items in the donation rooms.
Housekeeping
Volunteers assist with maintaining health standards within the shelter.
Tasks may include general cleaning duties, preparing bedrooms for new
clients, checking expiry dates on food items, etc.
Management Committees
Volunteer members on committees and the Board of Directors assist in
providing the direction and operating expertise necessary for the growth and
successful management of Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society.
Meal
Preparation/Baking
Volunteers assist in preparing meals for our clients. Shifts for supper are
weekends from 3:30 PM -5:30 PM.
Reception
Volunteers assist the administration staff with reception responsibilities.
Duties include answering the phone, light paperwork, greeting people at the
door, and photocopying. Shifts are available weekday afternoons 1 - 4:30 PM and
occasional mornings.
Special Events
Volunteers provide their time and skills in assisting with coordinating and
staffing external fund raising events organized within the community on
behalf of Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society such as casinos, information
booths, and special events.
